We live in a universe and on a planet that are both very fine-tuned to allow the existence of life. The odds of that fine-tuning occurring by chance on both a universal and planetary scale are so slim as to make such fine-tuning practically impossible. So how did it come about? There are really only two possible answers to that question. One is the multiverse theory that postulates the existence of many universes with ours being one — perhaps but not necessarily the only one — that won the life-sustaining lottery. The other is some sort of intelligent design, either by a supreme diety or by entities of which we have little or no knowledge. Since it is just as impossible to prove the existence of the multiverse as it is to prove the existence of God, both views can be defended, so you may take your choice. Neither view is proven or disproven if beyond Earth we find life or if we find no life. For me, the obvious choice is intelligent design.
