The photo of John Quincy Adams is fascinating. When I see pictures like that from the 19th century, I am struck by how heavy and hot the clothing appears to be, both for men and women. Good perhaps in the winter in drafty underheated buildings, but sweltering in summer heat, long before air conditioning was even thought of. I guess folks back then coped as best they could. Of course, the photos we see are usually very formal, with people dressed up, so maybe they were more comfortable most of the time.
