I’ve been thinking about abortion.

What a pleasant topic. What have you decided?

I’ve decided you can’t have it both ways.

What does that mean? Would you care to elaborate?

Sure. Most pro-lifers — — those who are opposed to abortion — — base their opposition to abortion on religious grounds, right?

That’s right. Not necessarily all, but I’d say most take that position.

So the idea is that God is the ultimate giver of life, and therefore all life is sacred and we as human beings should not be ending life. Does that sound about right?

I think so.

But if that is the case, then where do exceptions fit in? Most pro-lifers will make exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger. But how can such exceptions be made if human beings should not decide who lives and who dies?

But the exceptions are made for good reasons. In the case of rape, a woman could be forced to carry a child conceived in horrific sexual violence.
