John Wayne was a hero. Marion Morrison was a jerk. And he coudn't act his way out of a paper bag. He always just played himself. He was spectacularly successful playing himself and he even made a few good movies, but can you imagine John Wayne losing himself in a role as Brando did with Vito Corleone or Daniel Day-Lewis did with Lincoln?
