If you have sufficient faith, you can pretty well shut out any disturbing ideas and cling only to those beliefs with which you are comfortable, especially in the face of evidence to the contrary. We currently have problems in the United States because that sort of faith-based epistemology has crept into our political discourse. In the minds of all too many, things are true just because they say they are true, regardless of evidence, and a potent propaganda apparatus works 24/7 to keep people in that mindset.
