If you are going to write for Medium, you have to do it because you love to write. Don't expect much money. With research, writing, and tweaking, writing a decent article takes a good deal of time. And then no one reads it. That makes no sense, which is why I stick to comments, both on Medium and Quora. They can be done quickly, and usually at least one person reads my comments, sometimes a few people read them, but if no one reads them then no great time has been lost.
I think you have to go where your passions take you. I enjoy writing comments, but my real passion is making music, so that's where most of my time goes. I might do an occasional article just to see what happens. But then no one reads it, which pretty much confirms what I already knew.
Isaac Asimov wrote an incredible number of books and stories, both science fiction and science fact. He once said he actually enjoyed the process of writing: setting down at the typewriter, putting his thoughts on paper, refining his prose, erasing errors, etc., etc. Of course he made money as a writer, but his point was that he enjoyed writing just for the sake of writing. We don't use typewriters any more, but the principle is the same: you have to have a passion for the process.
In other words, whatever "it" is, if you are willing to do it for free, then do it. If "it" is writing for Medium, then go for it. You might even make a buck or two.
