If we are living in a simulation run by an alien teenager in his/her/its bedroom, then UFOs may simply be artifacts produced when the creator interacts with the creation. That's why they come and go as they do and that's why there's no hard evidence of their existence. They don't exist any more than your cursor exists in your software. We see and keep track of the cursor, but it would be a total mystery to the avatar in your computer game.
