Another way of looking at this is that the Bible reflects (gasp!) theological evolution. Human understanding of God progressed as time went on. So while in the Old Testament we have primitive attempts to explain creation as well as God described as a "man of war" (Exodus 15:3), by the time we get to the New Testament there is a much fuller understanding of God as a God of love (I John 4:8). The creation story just needs to be appreciated for what it is.
